New Forest National Park

The New Forest lies mainly in south-west Hampshire – from east of the Avon Valley to Southampton Water and from the Solent coast to the edge of the Wiltshire chalk downs. It includes the largest remaining tracts of unenclosed pasture land, heathland and forest in the heavily populated south-east of England. As well as providing a visually remarkable and historic landscape, the ecological value of the New Forest is particularly great because of the relatively large areas of lowland habitats, lost elsewhere, which have survived. The area contains several kinds of important lowland habitat including valley bogs, wet heaths, dry heaths and deciduous woodland.

The New Forest Heritage Area covers 570 km2 (140,000 acres),[12] and the New Forest SSSI covers almost 300 km2 (74,000 acres), making it the largest contiguous area of un-sown vegetation in lowland Britain.  The New Forest is drained to the south by two rivers, the Lymington River and Beaulieu River, and to the west by the Dockens Water, Hucklesbrook, Linbrook and other streams. The highest point in the New Forest is Telegraph Hill.  Its summit is 167 m (550 ft) above sea level.
